Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a frequent severe complication in cirrhotic patients with ascites. Carbapenem antibiotics are currently the treatment of choice for patients with hospital-acquired or healthcare-related infections. However, there is limited evidence available on the efficacy of ertapenem in cirrhotic patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. As a result, the pharmacokynetics and pharmacodynamics of this antibiotic are still unknown. The objective of this study was to develop and validate measurement procedures based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) to determine ertapenem concentrations in plasma and ascitic fluid.
