Abstract
Poor medication adherence is one of the leading causes for health problems among older adults in the United States. This paper examines older adults' current medication adherence practices and tools, supporting medication adherence in older adults and explores their perspectives on future technologies, including AI-integrated tools, to improve adherence. Following a literature review, sixty-five members of an independent living community were recruited to determine their current adherence routines and their attitudes towards more advanced adherence technologies to assist them with their medication intake. Results showed that most older adults were taking an average of six medications per day and used simple pillboxes or related tools to support adherence. However, many of them often struggled with managing their medications and were open to using sophisticated technologies such as wearables, auditory warnings, and AI-supported technologies to improve medication adherence. Near-future studies can focus on testing such technologies.
