The Kinematic Chain in Hindustani Classical Singing: An Exploratory Bioacoustic Pilot Study of Seated Posture and Vocal Quality.

Abstract
Seated posture (Asana) is an important part of Hindustani classical vocal pedagogy, yet its biomechanical function remains under-researched. This exploratory pilot study applies "Kinematic Chain" theory-where proximal stability dictates distal mobility-to investigate the link between pelvic alignment and vocal acoustics. Ten students (n = 10), beginner-to-intermediate level, learning in a university music college were recorded performing Aalap (slow Swara improvisation) and Sapat (fast ascending-descending variation in a set tempo) tasks. To address the challenge of masking by drone accompaniment (Tanpura &Tabla), raw audio was processed using the 'Demucs deep learning model' to isolate the vocal stem prior to analysis of Spectral Centroid and Vocal Efficiency. Subsequently, the pYIN (Probabilistic YIN) algorithm was deployed for fundamental frequency (F0) estimation to objectively quantify performance efficiency through high-resolution pitch tracking. Descriptive analyses indicate that unstable postural bases are frequently associated with compensatory cervical protraction and reduced aerodynamic output. Intra-subject analysis revealed that correcting pelvic mechanics increased vocal efficiency by up to 38.5% (student 10) and Spectral Centroid by ∼171 Hz (student 7). Triangulation with participant feedback confirmed these findings: 70% of subjects identified mechanical anchoring (either via pelvic stabilization in Vajrasana or upper-body stabilization) as superior for breath control. These findings suggest that traditional stable postures, such as Vajrasana, function as a biomechanical optimization strategy to meet the specific acoustic and technical demands of Hindustani classical vocal performance.
