Humanized-Intelligent-Green Chemistry (hiGC) Paradigm: Advancing Beyond Traditional Green Chemistry Illustrated by Ionic Liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Abstract

Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are two types of innovative green solvents that significantly enhance the development of green chemistry. The 12 principles proposed by Anastas et al. in 1998 have guided the advancement of green chemistry, later supplemented by revised principles. However, these principles are established before the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), rely heavily on extensive trial and error, and often disregard user experience, safety and psychologic comfort. Here, we propose the new principles of humanized-intelligent-green chemistry (hiGC) by simultaneously integrating humanization, intelligence, and greenness, with the aim to enhance and potentially replace the principles of traditional green chemistry (tGC). Moreover, the necessity of replacing tGC with the hiGC paradigm is demonstrated through the representative examples of AI applications in properties, catalysis, and separations of ILs/DESs. This review seeks to open up a new paradigm of hiGC for the advancement of chemistry with humanization, intelligence, and greenness through the use of green ILs and DESs.
