From "Starry Sky" to Meaning: Why Figurative Language Still Matters in Oral Diagnosis Education?

Abstract
Pattern recognition has long been central to oral diagnosis, often supported by figurative or symbolic language that translates complex morphological features into familiar visual analogies. In parallel, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have expanded diagnostic capabilities, raising questions about the role of these traditional cognitive tools in contemporary dental education. This Perspective examines symbolic language as a form of analogical reasoning that helps organize perception, memory, and interpretation in diagnostic learning. Drawing on examples from clinical, radiographic, and histopathological contexts, it argues that such descriptors do more than illustrate findings, as they shape how learners construct meaning from visual information. While their use requires attention to potential ambiguity and variability in interpretation, symbolic expressions can be intentionally incorporated into teaching strategies, including active learning approaches, to support engagement and diagnostic reasoning, particularly in less familiar conditions. Rather than being displaced by AI, symbolic language may complement technological tools by reinforcing cognitive frameworks essential to clinical reasoning and training.
