Abstract

BACKGROUND: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) commonly estimate intention-to-treat (ITT) estimands. However, when nonadherence to assigned treatment occurs, ITT estimands reflect the effect of being offered treatment, rather than adhering to it and thus are less useful for clinical decision-making.
